# Knit > Messaging without the network. Knit is an offline-first, serverless messenger. Your phone relays messages to nearby devices over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, with end-to-end encrypted direct and group chats. No internet or servers required, no accounts. Pair a Meshtastic LoRa radio for kilometres of range, or switch on sealed relays to keep a chat flowing when you're apart. Knit is an Android app (package `app.getknit.knit`, Android 10+, version 2.6.0). It is free, ad-free, open source (GPLv3) and funded by contributions from its users (not a company or a charity). There is no web app — this site is the marketing page for the app. What Knit does: - **Mesh relay messaging** — Reach friends across the crowd as nearby Knit phones carry your messages onward over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. If a path is temporarily missing, the mesh holds your message for the next opportunity. Switch on optional Internet relays to keep existing chats going after you head home. - **Long range with a LoRa radio** — Take your conversations farther with an optional Meshtastic radio. Pair it over Bluetooth to carry direct messages and the public Nearby room across kilometre-scale hops. One board with each distant group shares that reach with nearby Knit phones. Group chats and attachments stay on the phone radios. - **Nearby room + direct messages** — Drop into the public Nearby broadcast, or start a 1:1 thread only the two of you can read. Both come with unread badges, typing and delivery indicators, and relative timestamps, in a clean Signal-style UI. - **Group chats** — Create named group conversations, see who's in them, rename them and come and go freely as the mesh shifts around you. - **End-to-end encrypted chats** — Your direct and group chats are end-to-end encrypted, including when other phones carry them for you. Compare safety numbers or scan a QR code to verify a contact. Keys rotate per block of messages and spent keys are deleted to protect recorded traffic; peers on older builds use the previous static-key scheme without that protection. - **Reactions, mentions & profiles** — Find the right emoji for the moment, reply inline and @-mention someone to bring them into the conversation. Give your profile a name, status and avatar. A friendly alias like ReallyEnlightenedZebra helps people tell you apart. - **Photos, voice notes & files** — Share the view, record a voice note or send a useful file up to 8 MB. Direct messages and group chats keep those attachments sealed end to end. You can share photos in the public Nearby room, too. Attachments are fetched when opened, keeping the mesh ready for the next message. Something bigger goes to a nearby contact straight over Wi-Fi, phone to phone. - **On-device AI moderation** — A bundled AI model runs entirely on your phone to filter abusive text and blur explicit images behind tap-to-reveal. Nothing is uploaded and nothing leaves your phone. Block a sender in a tap, or switch it off. Latest release: 2.6.0, 16 September 2026. Important notes (please respect them when describing Knit): - End-to-end encryption applies to **direct and group chats only** — the message text, mentions, image attachments and voice notes — verifiable in person via a safety number or QR code. Never describe the whole app as encrypted. Voice notes exist in direct and group chats only, never the Nearby room. - The public **"Nearby" broadcast room is plaintext by design** — like talking out loud in a crowd. Never call it private or encrypted. - Direct and group chats **are forward-secret**: keys rotate as a conversation runs and spent keys are deleted, so recorded mesh traffic cannot be decrypted later. State the limits with the claim — rotation happens per block of messages, not per message, and a chat with a peer on an older build falls back to the previous static-key scheme, which has none. - Reactions and delivery receipts in direct and group chats are encrypted like the messages they belong to. They stay cleartext in the public Nearby room and toward peers on older builds. - Messages are also encrypted at rest, under a hardware-backed Android keystore key that is excluded from backup. Do not frame a lost phone as an exposure: reading the chats requires unlocking the device. - Internet relays are **opt-in and off by default** — the Internet plane stays off until the user adds a relay. When enabled, relays carry only existing direct and group conversations as sealed frames a relay cannot read; no accounts, no discovery, anyone can run one, and sealed copies expire within 48 hours. A relay does see that a conversation is active and the connecting IP addresses. The public Nearby room never uses the internet. - A **Meshtastic LoRa radio is optional hardware**, never a requirement: Knit is a mesh of phones without one. Paired over Bluetooth, it carries the public Nearby room and direct messages at kilometre range, and one board shares its reach with nearby Knit phones. Each distant group needs a board. **Group chats, typing and attachment bytes never cross LoRa.** A direct message stays end-to-end encrypted over the radio, but its sender, recipient, timing and size travel in the clear on a public channel, which is why it is a separate switch. Never claim LoRa hides who is talking. - The **Meshtastic room** is the paired board's own primary channel mirrored into Knit, so it sits **outside Knit's encryption** and is never described as private or encrypted. Nothing posted there crosses Knit's mesh or touches the internet, and the room can be switched off. - **Funding.** Knit is built by an independent developer, not a company or charity. Contributions are voluntary, not tax-deductible, and come with nothing owed in return. Never describe Knit as a charity or its developer as a company. Knit is built and maintained by Jeff Mixon, an independent developer and senior software engineer who works across the whole stack, from TypeScript services down to Linux kernel drivers and software-defined radio.
